Minnesota Stones

Come see and touch my new body of work:

Minnesota Stones is a new body of work from Minneapolis jeweler Annika Kaplan. The project, funded by an Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, is a collection of rings made with stones found at 7 locations in the state of Minnesota. The collection consists of 35 rings, with hand-cut stones set in sterling silver. The pieces are hand fabricated, carved in wax and then cast, or a combination of the two processes.

“By highlighting stones from Minnesota, I hoped to build appreciation for common minerals as opposed to gems traditionally used in fine jewelry. Such gems are often mined under questionable ethical conditions. Through sourcing and cutting readily available local gem material, I wanted to create beautiful, wearable art while making a statement about the jewelry industry’s obsession with rare and high-value gems.”

*Annika Kaplan is a fiscal year 2018 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota States Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
